Purpose of the job: Responsible for the overall management, planning and coordination of AOAV’s research programme in Nigeria

Background
Building on almost 20 years of outstanding contributions to the prevention of armed violence, including the use of landmines, cluster munitions, and small arms and light weapons, Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) carries out research, advocacy and field programmes towards a single goal – reducing the incidence and impact of armed violence.
In support of this mission, AOAV is looking for a dynamic, experienced project manager to push forward AOAV’s work in Nigeria.
The primary responsibility of the project manager is to engage with and support a variety of Nigerian actors interested in reducing the prevalence and impact of armed violence in Nigeria. The manager will work closely with AOAV’s local NGO partners, including those who currently belong to the National Working Group on Armed Violence, and assist these partners in becoming more effective in their work and enhance their national and international visibility (as desired).
The primary goal of the National Working Group is to become an important, respected and reliable source of information, analysis, and policy recommendations on armed violence in Nigeria.
Building on previous research and relationship-building by AOAV in Nigeria, the project manager will assess key drivers of armed violence and investigate and recommend effective interventions in different regions of the country.
With the support of AOAV’s headquarters-based staff, the project manager is also expected to design, organise and run capacity building workshops for AOAV’s partners, based on skills identified as high priorities; for example, improve their programme management, reporting, finance and accounting skills, data collection, research, and other similar topics.
The project manager will also help AOAV explore the possibility and related logistical and legal requirements for setting up an AOAV office in Nigeria.
The project manager will report to AOAV’s Director of Policy and Investigations, but will also consult and collaborate consistently with AOAV’s Programmes Department on relevant issues. Parts of the six month assignment will be spent in AOAV’s London Office for briefings and final report writing.
